BIOFANIA

Biofania is a project conceived by Giorgio Viali that explores the precarious intersections of urban visuality, involving cities such as Padua, Vicenza, and Verona. The project develops as a collection of cohesive units that integrate various disciplines, creating a dialogue among cinema, sociology, philosophy, and visual practices.

CINEMA The concept of Biorealism fits within a long tradition of artistic and cinematic research rooted in Neorealism and avant-garde movements. Notable examples include Gian Vittorio Baldi's "Theme and Diktat" from 1953, which promoted a cinema that is direct and faithful to reality through rules such as shoulder-mounted cameras, natural lighting, absence of musical commentary, and sequential ordering.

Building on this tradition, the Dogma 95 movement emerged in 1995, founded by Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. It was a protest against commercial cinema, emphasizing authenticity and simplicity through ten dogmas that prohibit special effects, artificial lighting, and large Hollywood productions.

Thirty years later, in 2025, the Dogma 25 collective was launched as a revolutionary impulse aimed at defending cinematic integrity through a "vow of chastity" articulated in additional dogmas, responding to the trends of digital cinema and global mega-productions.

SOCIOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY

Biofania also draws inspiration from social and philosophical research, particularly Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopia. According to Foucault, heterotopias are real, tangible spaces that reflect, represent, and challenge aspects of society, serving symbolic and practical functions such as sites of deviation, segregation, or renewal. Examples include parking lots, laundromats, or functional urban spaces, which become spaces for critical reflection on the relationship between space, power, and knowledge.

The Biofania project is nourished by these visual, social, philosophical, and media reflections, creating a bridge between disciplines and fostering a critical reflection on the city, culture, and contemporary reality.

In summary, Biofania represents a multidisciplinary and experimental journey to explore the precarious intersections between image, space, and society, adopting an approach that rejects conventions and promotes an authentic, critical vision of urban reality.

BIOFANIA - PRIVATE/PUBLIC

GIORGIO VIALI

The project "Private/Public. Visual and Social Experimentation" by Giorgio Viali is a profound investigation into the nuances and boundaries between personal and shared spaces, between private intimacy and public visibility. This reflection is situated within a broader cultural context that addresses themes of identity, privacy, social control, and freedom of expression.

The idea of exploring "social and political demarcation lines" recalls fundamental concepts from philosophy and sociology, such as Michel Foucault's analysis of power and control mechanisms through spaces and everyday practices. The distinction between private and public becomes a contested territory where actions can acquire different meanings depending on context and social norms, and where "indeterminate territories" serve as zones of experimentation and resistance.

Using visual tools like photography, video, and cinema, the project becomes a form of "social art" that examines and questions these boundaries. Visual experimentation thus becomes a means to interact with urban space and its dynamics, echoing documentary cinema and anthropological photography that aim to capture and reveal the subtleties of social relationships and urban environments.

Among the projects mentioned:

  • BIOFANIA: Focuses on urban visual interactions, reminiscent of street photography and public art practices that aim to capture everyday life and its transformations spontaneously and directly. It also aligns with contemporary urbanism and "urban storytelling" practices.

  • BIOREALISM: Explores a more experimental approach, possibly linked to bioart and reflections on perceived reality, in line with contemporary art trends that question reality itself and how we perceive it.

  • ETEROTOPIA:

Revisits Foucault’s concept of "heterotopia," spaces other, spaces of alterity found at margins or outside conventional sites. The experimentation with inhabiting unconventional spaces, such as commercial spaces misused or repurposed, recalls urban art practices and interventions in the city fabric, often used as forms of social critique or reclaiming public spaces.

  • FOTOROMANZO:

Seems connected to the tradition of photographic novels, a genre rooted in 20th-century visual culture that narrates urban stories through sequential images, as seen in the works of authors like Robert Frank or Henri Cartier-Bresson.

In summary, Giorgio Viali’s project situates itself within a cultural landscape that intersects contemporary artistic practices, social and political theories on public and private spaces, and visual representations of urban reality. Its focus on the interstices between private and public reflects current tensions between control and freedom, privacy and visibility—central themes in the digital age and social media platforms.

Cultural references related to the themes:

  • Michel Foucault, "The Order of Things" and "Discipline and Punish" – for reflections on spaces of power and control.
  • Guy Debord, "The Society of the Spectacle" – for analysis of imagery and representation in contemporary society.
  • Henri Cartier-Bresson and street photography – for using photography as a tool for urban exploration.
  • Michel Foucault, "Of Other Spaces" (heterotopia) – for the concept of non-conventional spaces.
  • Walter Benjamin, "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" – for the role of images and reproduction in urban and social contexts.
  • Contemporary architecture and urban planning, such as Kevin Lynch’s work on "The Image of the City" – for attention to urban spaces and perceptions.
